Babies
and toddlers enjoy being read to. They love the sound and rhythm
of language. They may not understand the words initially but soon
come to recognise their favourite books - they may crawl to a shelf
and pull down favourites or even start jigging on your lap in anticipation
of the story. It's an opportunity to cuddle and relax as you read
together.
Toddlers who are read to constantly are quite certain that any adult
they meet will be a willing reader, and advance, book in hand, towards
any visitor in the home.
Listen carefully as they play, and you may well recognise snatches
of rhyme or phrases from their books that they are transferring
into their imaginary worlds.
